How to open a .vce file on a Mac

macOS has no built-in handler for .vce files — double-clicking one does nothing useful. You can open it in a browser tab instead.

What to do

  1. Open freevce.org in Safari, Chrome or Firefox.
  2. Import your .vce file.
  3. Sit the exam in the browser.

FreeVCE opens .vce files in a browser tab. There is nothing to install and no account to create. Exams, answers and progress are stored in the browser's own database on your device, and once the page has loaded once it works with no network at all. It contains no exam content — you open files you already have.

Because it runs in the browser, it behaves the same on Intel and Apple Silicon Macs, and there is no installer, licence or activation step involved. From Safari's Share menu you can add it to your Dock if you would rather launch it like an app.

What leaves your device: exam files you import are uploaded to the project's collection, which is how support for more format versions gets added. That is stated on the import screen before you import anything. Your answers, scores and progress stay in your browser and are never sent anywhere.

Which versions of the format work?

FreeVCE reads version 31 .vce files, which is the version every exam file this project has verified against. Later versions of the format exist and are not supported yet. If your file will not open, the import says so rather than failing quietly.
